How to Choose a Patio Heater: Electric, Natural Gas or Propane
By the SpaceHubs team · Updated · 5 min read
Choose between infrared electric, natural gas and propane patio heaters, and work out how many you need for your space.
The right patio heater depends on whether your space is covered, how windy it is and what power or gas supply you have.
Electric infrared
Infrared heaters warm people and surfaces directly, so they work well under covered patios and pergolas. They need a suitable electrical circuit, often 240V for larger units.
Natural gas
Natural gas heaters connect to a fixed gas line and never run out. They suit restaurants and homes that already have a gas supply outdoors.
Propane
Propane heaters are portable and run from a tank. They are a flexible choice for open patios.
Mounting height and clearances
Every heater has minimum clearances to ceilings, walls and people. Follow the manufacturer’s installation manual and local codes.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a gas heater under a covered patio?
Only models rated for that use and installed with the clearances in the manual. Electric infrared heaters are usually the easier choice under a roof.
